The Art of Learning: Monsanto Fund Awards $10,000 Grant to Great Circle Therapeutic Arts Program

An example of therapeutic art created by a Great Circle School student.

St. Louis, Mo. (Jan. 14, 2016) – Therapeutic art programs can open up worlds of learning for students who might not be connecting through regular academics. Thanks to Monsanto Fund, students at Great Circle School in Webster Groves will continue to have access to arts programming to help them overcome barriers in their lives.

Great Circle’s educational program serves students whose success in a traditional setting requires intensive behavioral, therapeutic or social skills interventions. The school offers a unique therapeutic arts program, Arts Alive!, that supports the development of cognitive, social and personal competencies.

Students experience art to explore their feelings in a relaxed therapeutic and educational environment. Hands-on experiences enable them to make positive changes in their behavior and improve self-esteem and gain confidence. They also identify techniques for resolving conflict, thus enhancing relationships with adults and peers.

The program incorporates needs assessments, goal-setting and results analysis to ensure students are progressing in areas of importance to their self-development and learning.
